Welcome Creative Adventurers! Here it is! The reveal of my Summer 2022 Scrappy Sizzler Quilt! I hope you had lots of fun sewing along with me. The photo above is the multi-color version of the quilt top. I think it turned out great. I’ll have the blue and white version to show you in a couple of weeks. I love the denim sashing and borders. They complement the busy, scrappy blocks and give the eye a place to rest. I’m having it quilted with a medium green thread in a gently floral pattern. I can’t wait to get it back from my long arm quilter!

Hello Creative Adventurers! This year, I’m sewing along with Sherri McConnell’s A Quilting Life Block of the Month for 2022 and thought I’d take you along each month on my creative journey. In this month’s video, I take you step-by-step through how to construct two variations of the March 2022 block and give you lots of tips and tricks. The original version of March’s sawtooth star block has a fun four-patch with half-square triangles. My version has a solid print center to show off my cute Christmas sloth fabric. HOW TO SEW AN HOURGLASS PINWHEEL (QUARTER-SQUARE TRIANGLES) BLOCK!
Hello Creative Adventurers! This year, I’m sewing along with Sherri McConnell’s A Quilting Life Block of the Month for 2022 and thought I’d take you along each month on my creative journey. In this month’s video, I show you how to construct the Feb. 2022 block. I take you step-by-step through how to make this classic block and give you lots of tips and tricks. Hello Creative Adventurers! Today’s Creative Adventure is a fresh, modern twist on the jelly roll race quilt. It adds vertical checkerboard sections to the typical jelly roll race quilt to make a quilt that is approximately 66 1/2″ X 74″ — perfect for a large throw or twin bed. I used florals but it would look great in patriotic prints or cars/trucks novelty prints too! Even a board games print would be fun! (An affiliate link for fabric can be found below.) I’m sewing with Red Barn Christmas fabric by Sweetwater. Use what you have in your stash, check your local quilt shop or fabric store first. If you need on-line sources, the following have RBC Layer Cakes (10″ squares) in stock as of Friday, Oct. 15, 2021: fatquartershop.com, connectingthreads.com, amazon.com.
Other fabric lines that I think would be great are: Snowed In by Heather Peterson (Riley Blake), Winter Elegance by Jackie Robinson (Benartex), or Winter Forest by Susan Winget (Wilmington Prints). Or you could just use six holiday fabrics from your stash plus some background fabric, that would work well too! I’m ENJOYING… the cooler weather (finally!). The Phoenix, AZ, USA metro area is, at long last, below 100 degrees F for the high each day. Sometimes I even roll the car windows down and enjoy the breeze!
I’m SEWING… a second version of my latest quilt pattern (and video tutorial!) to be released later this month. The first version is an Autumn theme, (sneak peek below) while this second version is in jewel-toned solids to give it a decidedly modern vibe.

OVERVIEW
This is a FREE 8 week Quilt Along. It will run from Oct. 8 – Nov. 24, 2021. The patterns for the quilt blocks will be FREE* through Nov. 30th so be sure to download the pattern each week. [Edited 10/21/21 Each SUNDAY ] (AZ, USA time), a new block pattern for the quilt will be available here on my website under PATTERNS for you to download. Each SUNDAY I will post a companion video tutorial showing you how to make the block for that week. The final week will be posted on Wed., Nov. 24, 2021, just before the American Thanksgiving holiday weekend so you will have plenty of time over the weekend to finish up the Christmas quilt in time for your holiday decorating.

LAYOUT
The completed quilt will measure approximately 63” x 74”. This is a simple, beginner friendly ROW quilt. Each row will feature a pictorial, pieced block image related to Christmas time. Each row has 5 blocks and there are 6 rows in total for a total of 30 blocks in all. The quilt will have simple sashing between the blocks and between the rows. It also includes a simple border.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
This quilt is designed to use a layer cake of 10” squares plus yardage for background, sashing and borders. You could use yardage cut into 10” squares instead as well. You will need another 3 ¾ yards for background fabric. See the Quilt Along Week #1 pdf download for additional information and details about the recommended yardage.
I will be using Red Barn Christmas by Sweetwater for the prints and Kona Cotton – Bone for my background yardage. I encourage you to shop your stash first, then shop local. If you need an on-line resource, I suggest Green Fairy Quilts.com. (This is an affiliate link and I may receive a small commission if you choose to purchase through this link.) Most of the major quilt fabric on-line retailers are carrying this line of fabric. The quilt would look wonderful in elegant, traditional or whimsical Christmas fabrics too or whatever you have in your stash.
*Beginning December 1, 2021, the patterns will be consolidated into a single pattern and it will be for sale in my Shop here at DKohnDesigns.com.

Have you ever been to a Quilt Festival or Quilt Show! These events are a great source of inspiration!
This past summer I was able to go on a big creative adventure (fully vaccinated and carefully socially distanced) and travel across a large portion of the United States. On the way home, I visited the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival in June 2021. This was an exhibit of quilts from more than a dozen guilds in the states of Kansas and Missouri. There also was a large vendor hall, several exhibits of Special Collections and dozens of workshops and lectures over several days.
The photos in this blog post are just a tiny sample of the quilts on exhibit. They are not a representative sample but instead they are what caught my eye at the time. You can see from my choices that I am often drawn to more modern quilts that have a playful or graphic feel to them.
The festival included quilts from all different facets of quilting. From traditional to modern to art quilting, there was some thing there for everyone to enjoy and be inspired by.

1) This medallion quilt really caught my eye. It’s medallion shape and colorful design were enhanced even more by the very detailed exquisite machine quilting:
2) This paper pieced quilt was a monochromatic beauty with a gorgeous black background and detailed machine quilting:
3) I love how the quilter chose cacti for the subject of this quilt. As someone who lives in the American desert southwest, cacti are something that I see every day. The quilter elevated this mundane desert plant by using lots of color and prints to bring sparkle to the quilt:
4) This unusual Christmas quilt used a simple cranberry and cream color palette. The design works so well with the traditional star blocks that framed the Christmas scenes that were beautifully embroidered on the quilt. The custom quilting only adds to the beauty of this quilt:
5) This modern design is a clever layer cake pattern. It would look great in solids or batiks as well:
6) This was my favorite quilt of the show. I love how the quilter took notice of leaves, just every day objects, in her environment and made them the focus of a beautiful embroidered quilt! It has the feel of an artist’ sketchbook:
7) Here is a vibrant and striking crumb quilt. The quilter’s careful use of color kept the quilt from looking muddy and the thin, white sashing really set off the vibrant blocks:
8) Look at this whimsical quilt of animals wearing glasses! So cute!:
9) Here is a quilt of traditional style houses interwoven with beautiful floral vines. The subtle colors and gentle quilting curves have the feel of a calm and orderly life:
10) I love this selvages quilt! I love the on point setting and the dark background. Both of these really set off the selvage blocks. The curved quilting softens the geometric design and adds movement to the quilt:
11) Last but not least, look at the glorious colors bursting from this boutiques quilt! It’s a stunning New York beauty style Quilt that draws you in words it’s vibrant colors and energy:
